Snogaine Mt St Gwinear (Jul or Aug-2023)
Snogaine - Mt St Gwinear -
To be planned for a Saturday in July or August when there is sufficient snow and suitable weather.
Event Details
The Snogaine is for cross country skiing or snowshoeing in teams 2-5 people. It’s about giving it a go. The Snogaine course is set on the Baw Baw Plateau, starting at the Mt St Gwinear car park. The plateau is accessed via the “Jeep Track” either over Mt St Gwinear or bypassing to the north , and from there the course consists of checkpoints on knolls and rises and along open flats. The course extends to the north of the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort area. Do as many or as few checkpoints for your ability.
We’ve attempted to run this Snogaine in recent years and had to cancel due to Covid and then lack of snow in 2022. To reduce the volunteer effort and emails sent out to promote a moving date we plan in 2023 to ask interested Snogainers to register for updates and we’ll communicated with only the registered people. We also plan to use Maprun GPS recording of checkpoints visited to eliminate the need to get checkpoints physically placed prior to the event. That way if there is a good snow fall we can run the event with maybe less than 7 days of the snow falling.
Information about how to register your interested will become available in May or June 2023.
Location Description
The event will be based at the Mt St Gwinear resort: a popular cross Country skiing location. Apart from our event entry fees, there no fees to access the course area (i.e. park entry of parking fees).
Course
Set during the winter of 2019 and set higher up the mountain where there is more reliable snow. The course area stretches overs from Mt St Gwinear ski trails through to edges of the Mt Baw Baw ski resort. Some checkpoints are in open areas, others among the snowgums.
Map
The map will be A3 size. 1:25,000 Scale. Premarked checkpoints printed on non-waterproof paper. You will need something to protect it.
Entry details
The event is dependent on snow conditions and opening entries may be delayed. The event might have to be postponed to the backup dates. In 2023 we’ll ask for interested Snogainers to register and we’ll communicate with the interested people setting a date in July of August when the snow is good.
Event Entry Fees
Adults $35. Junior (under 18) $20. Juniors get free entry when in a team with an adult.
