Stuart Brookes Memorial 6/12hr Rogaine (17 May 2025)
Event Details
In 1949, Stuart Brookes OAM was one of the founding members of the Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs Search and Rescue Section, now known as Bush Search and Rescue (BSAR), part of Bushwalking Victoria.
However, Stuart is probably best known to older bushwalkers for the maps he produced and published from the late 1940s to 2011. Many here today will have used an S.R. Brookes sketch map to explore Victoria’s alpine regions and other popular bushwalking destinations.
For his contribution to recreational bushwalking through map-making, safety in the bush, and search and rescue he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 1988.
The VRA is proud to acknowledge Stuart’s contributions to mapping and safety in Victoria and is pleased to support the request from BSAR to name this event in his honour, as the Stuart Brookes Memorial Rogaine. This rogaine will be held in conjunction with BSAR’s annual main training.
Rogaine Format
A 12hr and 6hr rogaine starting at the same time – the 6hr is an all daylight event while the 12hr will have night navigation. If you have done a few rogaines or would like to challenge yourself, plan to stay out a bit longer and pick up some checkpoints after sunset to experience night rogaining.
Location Description
This rogaine is set in the Wombat State Forest north west of Daylesford. The forest is open with very little under growth as captured in the wed site image. Some of it is event more open.
Course
On this course the altitude gain from lowest point to highest point is about 250m. 12hr teams and maybe a few faster 6hr teams may reach the pine forests located furthest from the hash house. Surrounding the hash house will be a small number of farmland checkpoints and 6 checkpoints within 1km of the hash house.
Map
The map is colour printed on non-waterproof paper and SRA3 size (450mm x 320mm) and 1:25,000 scale, with 1km grid lines oriented to Magnetic North. Contours are spaced 10m apart.
