Hunt for the Whroo October: Nigel Aylott 24hr Victorian Rogaining Championships, Including a 6hr & Roving 15hr (12-13 October 2024)

Admin Opens:9:00 am , Event Start:12:00 pm, Event Finish:12:00 pm Duration:24 hours hours

The 24hr event will be the 46th Victorian 24hr Rogaining Championships and the 18th Nigel Aylott Memorial Rogaine.

Roving 15hr Non-Championship Rogaine - Saturday 12 October 2024

Admin Opens:9:00 am , Event Start:12:00 pm, Event Finish:12:00 pm Duration:15 hours hours

After a 10 year hiatus and following feedback, we are bringing back the Roving 15hr event!

The Roving 15hr will be slightly different to how it was done previously. Roving 15hr entrants should register in the 24hr event, and will automatically be scored in both the Roving 15hr and in the 24hr. Teams on course for over 15hrs but less than 15.5hrs will incur late penalties in the Roving 15hr results and receive a 24hr result. Teams staying out for more than 15.5 hours will be scored in the 24hr rogaine only.

This means that some age groups could see teams finishing within 15 hours potentially placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their categories in the 24hr Championship results.

How a roving 15hr rogaine works
You may spend no more than a cumulative 15 hours in total on course out of the 24hrs that the rogaine is underway. How you organise the 15hrs is entirely up to you – you could rogaine for 15 hours straight and finish at 3am or return to the Hash House during the event for some sleep and depart again the next morning. This enables the possibility of a full 9hrs of rest, while still participating in the longer 2-day event but only having to compete against like-minded (sleep-conscious) rogainers, plus extra Hash House meals.

You must punch in when you return to the Hash house, and punch out when you leave. This stops and restarts the timing for your team. You will need to ensure that you accurately calculate your time on course yourself in order to avoid late penalty points for clocking more than 15hrs on course.

However you spend your 15hrs or less on course, you must finish by 12 noon on Sunday. The setters have taken care to place checkpoints that facilitate two routes out and two routes back to the Hash House.

6hr Non-Championship Rogaine - Saturday 12 October 2024

Admin Opens:9:00 am , Event Start:12:00 pm, Event Finish:6:00 pm Duration:6 Hours hours

Event Details

The 2024 Nigel Aylott Memorial Victorian Rogaining Championships, with accompanying Roving Fifteen Hour and Six Hour events will be held in the historic gold-mining area surrounding Whroo on Oct 12 and 13, 2024.

The Hash-House will be at Chinese Camp, which is at the corner of the Nagambie-Rushworth Road and Cheongs Rd, just to the west of the Balaklava Mine at Whroo. Close in, there are fascinating historical features. Further out, the course is entirely in box ironbark forest. Parts of it are beautiful.

The area for the event is, by Victorian rogaining standards, very flat. The country is mostly open, with very good visibility. Teams will be able to move through the bush at a fast pace and navigation in the daylight hours will be relatively easy. However, we expect the lack of strong features to make night navigation challenging.

If you have not entered a long event before, why not take advantage of the Roving 15 hour option? You can sample night navigation, overnight Hash-House atmosphere and the thrill of the sun coming up without having to be on the course the whole time.

Nigel Aylott

Nigel Aylott was a world championship winner, Victorian Rogainer, Committee member for fifteen years and a dedicated volunteer.  In 2004, he died at age 38 in an adventure racing accident in North America.

Volunteers Needed

We need your help! Please volunteer.

Rogaines could not run without volunteers, and this is our most challenging event of the year to organise! We have about 40 volunteer roles left to fill before this event can run smoothly. There are many ways you can help out, some without having miss out on rogaining. For example, you could help with setup before, or collecting checkpoints after the event, or lend a hand after you finish the 6hr or 15hr rogaine.

Sign up to volunteer at this event here.
