Volunteer FAQ

Where does the VRA get people to run events?

We are completely run by volunteers. We couldn’t organise rogaines without them!

Each year it takes around 350 people to run the events and another 40 people to do all the work behind the scenes. We’re always looking for more volunteers to help on the day or behind the scenes – can you help? Check out our volunteer roles.

What is involved in running an event?

Running a rogaine takes a village of volunteers! From course setting to marshalling on course and even cooking for the hungry competitors. Some roles require more time and commitment than others. We are very happy to match you up to the type of role that you want to do, your experience and availability.

Why should I volunteer?

The better question is, why not? There are lots of perks to volunteering, both social and personal. Most importantly, you get to be part of a fun event – imagine all the tired happy faces you’ll see in the hash house.

Other perks include free food, hot drinks, and meeting others in the community and making new rogaine-loving friends.

How much will it cost me?

Not a cent! You’ll be reimbursed for all out of pocket expenses you incur (such as equipment) and reasonable travel expenses. Meals and beverages will also be provided.

The best thing is the satisfaction that you have contributed to a great day for hundreds of people.

What is my time commitment?

It depends on your role. Key volunteer positions like Setters and Vetters require more time and commitment leading up to the event, sometimes several full days depending on the event. Other roles, like first aid and water droppers, are on the day only. So, no matter how much time you can give, there’s something for you. There is a lot of detail about each role in the Resources section or below.

What help is available for me?

You’ll be provided with lots of help and support along the way. We provide detailed guides and role descriptions, as well as access to a coordinator who will help you leading up to the event and on the day. Plus, you’ll be helping alongside a whole team of volunteers who have a mix of experience.

I want to volunteer! Who do I contact to get involved?

Start by checking out the volunteer roles here. Found a role you like? Contact our volunteer coordinator.

You can also contact the competition manager for more details on setting and coordinating an event.

How else could I support the VRA?

It’s not all about event day. Get involved behind the scenes:

  • Join the VRA committee. We’re a bunch of people who meet once a month to set the direction for rogaining and manage the overall operation of the Organisation. Fresh faces with fresh ideas are always welcome! You don’t have to be a long time member to contribute.
  • Be an instructor at a training day. Help us train rogaining novices. Good navigation skills are a must!
  • Take on a support role. From recruiting volunteers and repairing checkpoints to helping manage membership, coordinating the newsletter, there’s a long list of ways you can help. Get in touch for an obligation-free chat: volunteer coordinator
